BSDH Teachers meeting

BSDH have asked for a specialist trainee in SCD representative to go to the teachers meeting and deliver a report about how trainees are involved in teaching. The first report was delivered by Julie Edwards (King’s College London).

The main points were that StR’s attached to teaching hospitals are providing quite a lot of SCD lectures, tutorials and clinical teaching.

The BSDH teachers group have decided to have a STR rep to the meeting on a regular basis. Anyone interested in attending please contact Tim Friel.

BSDH committee meeting

The BSDH committee meeting took place at the BDA in Wimpole Street. Jane Temple and Bryan Kerr were invited as StR representatives.

At the meeting the committee members talked about their support of specialist trainees  in Special Care Dentistry and how they would like more input and involvement from them. The following was also discussed:

  • As way of support BSDH are offering that StRs can come to the scientific meetings at the reduced rate (choose the category A box when booking).
  • BSDH will invite StRs to present their research at the conferences as a regular slot.
  • Shelagh Thompson is looking for StRs to submit papers to the Journal of Disability and Oral Health. RCTs, Audits and case series reports would all be very useful in helping the Journal to become listed on pubmed.
  • BSDH is also looking for StRs to get involved in updating their guideline documents with new evidence. Please contact Jane or Bryan for more info on this.
  • Karen Gordon (Chair of the SAC) discussed the progress of the tri-collegiate exit exam in Special Care Dentistry. This is moving forward and will hopefully be in place by summer 2012. The possible use of the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme Website for an electronic logbook and work based assessment log was discussed. Karen reassured us that StRs would not be expected to redo logbooks if they had started on paper/excel spreadsheet.

The next meeting is in June. If StRs would like anything discussed please contact Jane or Bryan.
